March 31, 1903 marked the first day Crayola Crayons came into the market. The first Crayola crayons came in a box 8 and sold for 5 cents. Today, the original makers of the crayon, Binney & Smith, produce about 7 million crayons every day in 120 colors. There are 23 reds, 20 greens, 19 blues, 16 purples, 14 oranges, 11 browns, 8 yellows, 2 grays, 2 blacks, 1 white, 1 gold, and 1 silver.
It’s so easy to forget what a staple the crayon is. Do you remember coloring pages of a coloring book? Sitting in a restaurant and watching kids stay busy with their crayons and placemats?
Crayons are in every classroom across the U.S. and inspire children everyday to create their own piece of art. The average America child uses 740 crayons by his or her 10th birthday!
However, not every child is fortunate enough to experience the crayon or even get regular school supplies. In areas like the Philippines, where flooding and typhoons are a regular occurrence, children often lose their school supplies and don’t have the funds to replace them. Hanapin Marketing’s own web developer, Rey Lane, started a charity called Hope Afloat where dry bags full of school supplies are sent to children in the areas of the Philippines still affected by flooding.
One dry bag costs $10.
In celebration of Crayola Crayons, we are encouraging Hanapin Marketing staff members to donate $10 so that a child in the Philippines gets dry school supplies and the joy of the Crayola Crayon.
We’ve also inspired the staff to give a PPC Hero coloring page and/or word search to a young hero (child, a niece, a nephew, a cousin, etc) – and let them color our PPC Hero however their imaginations tell them to.
We’ll post all coloring pages and word searches on PPC Hero on Crayola Crayon Day, March 31.
Happy Coloring!
